Science and Human Spirit

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

I would say it’s probably safe to say that Science and Technology are important. But where does the line get crossed as far as dehumanizing us? I’m not even talking about God or, for that matter, spirituality. This Guy would reduce us –all our art, language, aesthetics, love, hate, imagination, desire, and thought — down to little more than a combination of feedback and looped electricity.

“There is nothing inherently mysterious about the mind or anything it makes,” Markram says. “Consciousness is just a massive amount of information being exchanged by trillions of brain cells. If you can precisely model that information, then I don’t know why you wouldn’t be able to generate a conscious mind.” At moments like this, Markram takes on the deflating air of a magician exposing his own magic tricks. He seems to relish the idea of “debunking consciousness,” showing that it’s no more metaphysical than any other property of the mind. Consciousness is a binary code; the self is a loop of electricity. A ghost will emerge from the machine once the machine is built right.

I can’t help but feel a little saddened by that idea: that there is nothing deeper to the human mind than mangled echoes and static. Nietzsche already killed God, but to now also kill the human spirit seems incredibly wrong. Aesthetic would cease to exist and art would become little more than the result of mental illness. While I realize that my mind is a very complex machine (and a very elegant one at that) I also tend to believe that consciousness is not inherent from the movement of said cogs –they are the manner in which the consciousness expresses itself.

The complex and elegant machine that is the mind is the result of consciousness; consciousness is not the result of a complex machine –to say otherwise would reduce us to cruel and bitter cockroaches. I’m not saying that their experiment should be halted or that it’s not worthwhile –just that I fear the results.

Fish Soup!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Garifuna fish soup:

4cups chicken/vegetable stock
2cups Coconut Milk
2 Eggs
1lb fish fillets (I’m using Tilapia) – cut into 2″ chunks, or whatever.

Spice with Chili powder, cumin, coriander, minced garlic, salt, pepper, mexican oregano, achiote, and ginger to taste.

Mix chicken stock and milk in a pot and warm it up (spice to taste).

Beat eggs, add spices.

Using a skillet and vegetable oil (!) dip the chunks of fish in the egg/spice batter and fry them. Drain the oil off the fish and add it to the base. Let simmer 20 minutes.

Deliciousness.

I just got done preparing this, and my kitchen smells quite sexy right now.

SOUP!

For you veggies out there: use vegetable stock and portobello (or maybe shiitake? I wonder…) mushrooms instead.

3. Debian went apeshit, so I’ve decided to install Freebsd again. It’s what I have running on this laptop and I love it. I’ve heard very good things about 7.0.
4. I’m sorry.
5. Black Beans and Rice for dinner!
6. Fuck the Country Club and whoever’s stupid idea it was to go there.
