unbinding yourself from your material possessions

This is something I’ve been considering for some time now:

“The idea in the movement was ‘everything you own owns you,’ ” said Dr. Grigsby, who sees roots of the philosophy in the lives of the Puritans. “You have to care for it, store it. It becomes an appendage, I think. If it enhances your life and helps you do the things you want to do, great. If you are burdened by these things and they become the center of what you have to do to live, is that really positive?”

I have an entire closet full of shit I never look, let alone use. I’ll probably be craigslisting a lot of it on Monday, which has been a plan for a few weeks now with yet another move coming upon me. While I’m hesitant to part with my wonderful bed, desktop PC and quite a few other things, I wonder if I wouldn’t be just as happy with mac powerbook, a kindle and a few other things that I need to get the work I do done. I’m don’t think I’ll ever be rabid enough to go Alexander Supertramp, but downsizing my inventory might make things a whole bunch easier.

I suppose if I can sell enough of it off at prices that could provide the more sparse tools, it might be okay. I’ve got at least one (maybe two, even) boxes of stuff that I’m going to haul over to Goodwill tomorrow after work. Yeah, I got a job –and just in time, too.
