Movie Review: The Happening

Okay, so I heard a little rumor that The Happening was Intelligent Design propaganda. This is only the case if you choose to see it that way, otherwise it’s just an awkward, albeit realistic, science fantasy flick. It’s certainly not M. Night’s best.

Elliot Moore is a high school science teacher who gets caught up in what appears to be a biological weapons attack on the east coast. He, like everyone else, flees. The movie basically centers around people running for their lives and, understandably, trying to understand what is happening. The foreshadowing given in the first few minutes of the movie is reprehensible and childish. In regards to the I.D. claims, Wahlberg’s character does state that evolution is a theory, and that is true. I cannot argue it. It is not a fact. He also states that there are some things that we will never be able to understand. I think that is pretty much correct. There is the allusion to the fact that their are mysterious forces at work in the universe, and I agree. Taking the mystery out of the universe is damn depressing. This isn’t the work of a Jebus-freak, it’s the work of somebody who believes that there is a meaning to life (and that we don’t know what it is). Big deal. Nihilists be damned.

Anyway, Wahlberg and everyone run around, crying for two hours, John Leguizamo plays an idiot and there is no action. People keep killing themselves, but it’s not really shown. If you want to see that, watch The Downfall. There is no heroism, no real action, just a lot of running and crying. The music is the most dramatic thing in it.

It’s not propaganda –it’s just bad.
