I’m not sure what to make of tor.com, really. I have a borderline fanaticism for SciFi movies and television. I never missed an episode of Sliders, and I have seen V a couple of times, but for some reason I just cannot sit down and read the stuff. I don’t know why.
I read John Scalzi’s After the Coup, and while I’ll admit that it was a fun read, it just didn’t seem to have much substance beyond witty dialogue, and a whole bunch of action. And that made it kind of boring, really. Really, really or just kinda really? I mean really, really. Dammit. Is there no meaty literary SF out there? (Aside from Solaris, or Philip K. Dick that is.)
The fact that science fiction writers have to explain that their characters need a brain-implanted translator to interact with aliens just seems like so much fluff. At the same time I would question them just outright communicating with some aliens, sans translators.
