in an instant, it might all seem so quaint and wonderful, only reveal the murderous Cthulhu

It’s a little more than trying to scrape through the truth to get to the reality. It becomes a matter of rationality: does this action make sense? If you’re looking through the lens crafted by Karl Jung, then it might not. If you’ve crafted your own lens out of DMT and nicotine, there is a good chance that it might.

The rationality falls out of favor when you start analyzing The Reason, though. The Reason is irrational.

Take for instance, the soul: it has no rational explanation, and is an absurd concept, even for Buddhists and those of us with slightly more bent Zen outlooks, where the soul is the keystone of the universe. If you dislodge it, will everything fall apart?

Amazingly, it does not. The soul is not your consciousness, or your personality, or your sense of awareness. Bacteria have souls, too, and if you can give me some insight as to how they are self-aware, then I commend you. Self-preservation is a mere pandering of the id.

But The Reason is the problem, again, not the mere question of it’s existence. And The Reason’s inverse is a more problematic question: why shouldn’t it exist? There is no good reason for there not to be a spark of life that separates the living from the dead, from stone and dirt.

You cannot separate the soul from the universe, for they are one in the same. Imagine, if you can, a hypercube. Now imagine that each corner (hyper-corner?) pierces the three-dimensional universe in only one spot: your pineal gland. Explode this hypercube into an appropriately obscene nth dimension, and each ‘edge’ aligns with a living being.

There is no life after death, and there is a good chance that if things go poorly, no one will ever realize that you or anything you ever knew existed; this is no reason not to enjoy yourself anyway. You have a soul, and how it is affected by your actions sets off a chain reaction across the multiverse. Think of the children.*

* I never thought I’d have a good reason to use that expression in any sort of writing.
