Patience and Discipline

It seems to be what I lack while playing poker. After an hour or so, I get impatient and start playing loose. I start calling trash that I wouldn’t normally play, I get neurotic and fold hands I know I should hold/raise on. Good thing I haven’t had to invest anything but time into it. Otherwise, I might be a bit perturbed.

One thing I’ve remembered is how intimidating a large stack can be. Those who have the big stack on the table cannot be easily intimidated by your all-in, reducing it’s strategic value. The obvious solution is to tighten one’s play to where you will win if you choose to play a hand. The problem then becomes patience: how many blinds can you sacrifice before you go all-in on a hand?

The shallow disappointment of getting that AK suited (or similar), going all in and watching everyone fold, leaving you with maybe a few hundred chip gain, is unique. It’s a hollow victory and may only serve to let you scrape by for a few more blinds (depending on when they go up).

Unmatched, however, is the all-in that sucks in two other players who are similarly stacked and then watching them vacate the table.

After you watch somebody quadruple their stack by fishing (which is quite noticeable unless they have no skill at all and actually believe they have a winning hand, which might muck things up a bit) while you are unable to even pull off a blind-theft, your morale might drop a bit.

Gambling is a helluva drug.

The blogging has been/will be light due to my recently increased workload.
