also, notice that the headline doesn’t make any sense.*

I might not say it often enough: I support euthanasia.

This is why:

A 23-year-old Baltimore man was sentenced to 50 years in prison yesterday for shooting and paralyzing from the neck down another 23-year-old who already suffered from cerebral palsy.

Retired Circuit Judge Thomas J.S. Waxter sentenced Aaron Speaks** of the 700 block of E. 20th St. to 50 years for the attempted first-degree murder of Derrell Smith and a concurrent 20 years for a handgun charge.

Smith is on a ventilator and can only speak through an artificial voice box and only for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, Assistant State’s Attorney Tonya LaPolla said.

Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but what quality of life can Derrell Smith expect? He was already cognitively disabled (read retarded) and is now paralyzed. It’s a shame, this is true, and I empathize. Kevorkian Compassion is needed.

* I blame John McIntyre, a copy-editor at the Baltimore Sun and highly entertaining blogger about all things copy.***
** Awesome name.
*** Hell, it’s not technically wrong, but read it out-loud. Perhaps ‘which’ might have worked a little better?
