  • Mr Average breaks the law at least once a day from speeding to illegal downloading. Because, really, for a law to be effective, there needs to be some sort of moral justification that a majority of the people adhere to or can at least guilt the rest into following. Crimes with either no victim or no readily identifiable victim do not register as wrong behavior to most people. If the only supposed victim is yourself, do you identify it as a crime? Given knowledge of free-will and the ability to make rational decisions, I doubt it.
  • Six Arrested in Prichard Prostitution Sting. Lot lizards? Perhaps, but irrelevant. I don’t believe prostitution should be illegal, but something about the mugshots tells me that a much more disturbing crime has been committed. Also, if you don’t feel a bit nauseous after that, there might be something wrong with you.
  • Obama to Nation: “Fuck this shit, I’m outta here”

In a boisterous and hastily-called press conference, Obama detailed his reasons for the decision. “I was prepared to fight global warming, reform the health care system, repair our crumbling roads, create a 21st century electric grid, find Bin Laden, end the war in Iraq, and bring peace to Israel and the Palestinians. But now you tell me I have to clean up the worst financial mess since the Great Depression too? One that’s going to plunge our economy into a recession for most of my administration while I take the blame? Fuck that. That’s fucking ridiculous. You guys clean up your own shit. I’m outta here.”

  • Are verdicts by non-unanimous criminal juries constitutionally permissible? One commenter makes the case that if they require a non-guilty verdict to be unanimous it puts the burden of proof on the defendent. Which is fucked up. And the question of reasonable doubt comes into play: are one or two jurors capable of demonstrating that? I think so. I have a sick fascination with trial law on a hobbiest level (read: I sometimes prepare to defend myself in court for fun). I see this as a violation of the 14th amendment as a sneaky way of circumventing ‘close-call mistrials’. Maybe?
  • Teen Cited for Destroying U.S. Flag. Which is, apparently, illegal in Minnesota. Or something. Until it gets to a Supreme Court hearing and they get three minutes into the arguments and the law is deemed unconstitutional and all that jazz. The Fourteenth strikes again. The comments on this posting are, once again, insightful and amusing.
  • California Unemployment Rate hits 7.7%. When we really hit the nadir, it’s going to get ugly. I recommend .45ACP.
  • Brookville sues church for helping the homeless. I’m neither a fan of zoning laws or churches, so I’m a bit torn here, but I don’t believe the homeless people in this situation should be made to suffer for stupid reasons.

I’m going to call it quits on this quasi-State of the Nation post (Yes, the first linked article is about Brits, but the same analysis applies). And I’m not going to even bother linking to anything regarding the bailout because every single economist blog is basically the same: “This is a bad idea…” Expect the crime rate to explode in 3, 2, 1…

For something of a lighter fare, some zany scientists carbon-dated Stonehenge with some interesting results.
