tidbits

  • Carolyn Kellogg takes a stand against writing advice. The bottom line is that there are no hard & fast rules outside of the accepted in-house styles at magazines and newspapers, a realm ruled by and enforced by the copy editor.
  • 16 Most fatal plants, all of which are common. Which is sort of disconcerting, because anyone with a pot, some water, and a will can commit a complex murder that would be difficult to investigate.
  • Yet the price of gas is still over $3 where I am. Last time oil cost this much, gas was $2.50/gal. I understand that a delay might occurr between crude and refined price shifts, but my wallet is still hurting.
  • The Republicans are going too anti-intellectual. It’s not just them. This is a theme burning across the US in many facets of life. Being smart is just not cool. I don’t talk about my grades with my peers -just my family and a few friends who already know me. Because smart people got us into all this mess, you know! We don’t need smart people, just common sense! (I’m straying from the point, but it’s just because I’m so disappointed by the lack of rioting lately).
  • Eavesdropping on Americans?! (more at the Volokh Conspiracy) This sort of makes me snicker. A lot. Having worked on Fort Gordon and having met several of these linguist guys, I can believe much of their story. However, I am going to point out that something on the level of ECHELON is simply too large for something like the facility where this takes place. Trust me -it’s just not happening in the way you think it is. The real story here is about how bored these guys are at work. And the lack of trust in the US contractors who work in the combat zone. I wish I could say more, but I’m not a fan of guys in black suits: I got in enough trouble for listing my religious preference as Muslim when I enlisted (they were actually amused after I explained it all to them). Also, they’re simply monitoring all sat. phone communication out of the area; there is no way to determine who is making the call before it is made. Despite my ACLU affiliation, I cannot help but laugh, though. Fuck it, it’s Friday. (I surely wish I could say more, but trust me, there is plenty of reason to laugh about it. I spent six years running satellite, network and telephone stuffs for the military and have a reasonable understanding of things I probably shouldn’t.)
  • Stop blaming the market. Also, stop being a bunch of tools. Of course, it could be God’s fault. What?
  • Cops are just party-poopers. Seriously, they’re hailing a busted party a victory because they found a dozen or so pills and a small bag of marijuana. And they interrupted some sex, if I read the article correctly.

Enough of that though, and my tidbits are beginning to sour a bit anyway. Having taken enough history classes, I know that things are not really worse than they were in the past -perhaps less garishly brutal, but still about the same. Which sucks.
