How will this all pan out?

Looking through my feedreader this morning I’ve noticed that 98% the reactions to the election results are either one of two things:

  • “whoo! we beat those dirty conservatives!”
  • “goddamn socialist won. they’ll choke on their cake.”

On the right, there seems to be a lot of racial and religious undertones I’m not seeing on the left. While I tend to agree that the Dem’s won’t do anything good for individualism, they might get some positive movement on the national debt (much like Clinton did before). I can hope so, anyway. Honestly, McCain should have been elected in 2000 if he were going to be elected -when he actually had some vitriol and ideas that made sense. Before he sold his soul to the neocons.

Taking into consideration that we can only expect small-steps with each president (this isn’t the 1800’s, I must remind you again) I think maybe the only expectations we can hope for are these:

  • Pro-Liberty nominations to the Supreme Court. A ruling against the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. More rulings upholding Roe v. Wade, Heller, Etc. This is probably the most important policy battleground.
  • Non-renewal of the Patriot Act and a move away from pseudo-police-state posturing.
  • Medical Marijuana will see an increase -and there may even be a relaxation on the war on drugs concerning it as there is more support for decriminalization on the left.
  • The new tax plan is unfair for those who have worked their asses off to get into those higher tax brackets. FairTax will never see the light of day for at least the next four years -the left loves it’s progressive tax plans.
  • Obviously we’re going to get stuck with this Universal Healthcare schtick. Which is great for people who don’t have/can’t afford it. For everyone else, there is going to be a lot of resentment.
  • A quick end to the war in Iraq -globalization will increase and the government will try to capitalize on this. Immigration might suffer despite a more open policy.
  • Legal stem-cell research.
  • Ending the embargo on Cuba.

Red – Things that are most important to me, but I only anticipate small, ineffective (but positive) changes.

Green – Things I’m opposed to, but will happen.

Blue – Things that are probably good, probably will happen but I’m fairly ambivilant about.

I’m guessing only a couple of these might happen, unless Obama pulls an insane “first 100 days” juggernaut. Otherwise, he’ll just get weighed down in the day-to-day crap. Foreign policy will swamp him.

What we’re seeing is the result of mob rule by proxy. It’s the logical next-step given the pattern of US heads of state. We didn’t get a small-government pro-liberty president-elect, but hell, it might end this goddamn war. Peace is good for business. Unless you’re a defense contractor. Like my ex-roommate (sorry, Marty!).

Wow, I just don’t have anymore time to write about this crap. I have real work to do, son. I’ll make some economic notes later.

(And that sonofabitch Chambliss won in my district. Shit shit shit.)
