This is why free-market libertarians are seen as evil.
This guy collected a whole mess of snarky reviews about The Day The Earth Stood Still. This guy at The Stranger also reviewed it, although much more hilariously. Although, truth be told, I liked the original. Both movies are preachy and have iffy bits. Whatever, they’re entertaining.
I won’t bother to pull up any more crap -I read a whole mess of stuff that made me double over with fear and loathing earlier today, while I was plodding through a dreary slop of paperwork. The truth is, I can’t help but vomit in my mouth a little bit when I see how depraved and weak-willed our society is. It’s as if the populace is reaching for the tit well into adolescence. This is when it comes to sex, the environment, economics, politics, culture, fashion, etc., etc.
But personal responsibility and individualism are somehow passe and evil, despite the fact that they are virtues in men. I don’t get it. It’s cool to be scared of, and bend to the will of big, faceless universal forces: like the weather, or god, or the government. And I’m trying to piece it all together, this sad state of affairs in which we pander to whomever seems like they’ll rub our collective bellies. I guess that’s why I started this thing: to document the horror of this place. It’s a fine place to be material-wise. Even most homeless people eat well enough. But there is some serious mental sickness going on here, and I’m pretty sure it’s not the fact that big, faceless corporations are being mean.
People are scared that the universe is a cold, heartless place. That they don’t have souls. That there is no after life and that their morals really don’t matter. People are scared that what they have is not important. Yet, despite this, they continue to push for egalitarianism across the whole spectrum of human existence: make it easier for the poor, the stupid and the weak. That sort of mentality allows shit to float, and leads to disaster for everyone. We’ve been headed this way for quite some time, but it’s speeding up.
