Structure & Surprise

It’s the name of the book I have for the poetry section of my Creative Writing course. While I’m not a particularly huge fan of poetry (my poetry collection is limited to some Billy Collins, the collected works of Lorca and two or three Bukowski books) I’ve found the book to be useful. I actually haven’t read much of it, honestly. I just get the gist of each sort of poetic turn and go from there.

Mike Theune – author of said book – has a blog for it now. Neither the book nor the blog deals with the mechanics of meter, rhyme or formal structures per se. That’s sort of gleaned from between the lines. These are more holistic structures he’s talking about in poetry. It’s a very good resource even without the book.

Mike is a very quirky guy and is currently on sabbatical; he visited Augusta and taught two classes in my course a few weeks back. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anyone so enthusiastic over poetry before in my life, honestly. It was very… nice doesn’t seem to be an appropriate word. It was kind of inspiring actually.
