I caught up with LOST, and found myself lacking in television to watch. I began watching Babylon 5… 1996 wants its CGI back, by the way. I loved this show when I was in high school – it has taken me 9 episodes to figure out what is wrong with it: it is preachy (about some moral questions). The themes are common enough (and very much Kantian in nature, if you’ve never seen it) for sci-fi, but its just so overt that it makes me kind of awkward. Homosexuality is only mentioned off-hand (meaning it doesn’t matter – and a very progressive and enlightened stance) and atheists are just as common as the religious.
Sci-fi makes me laugh and smile, mostly because of the wonderful “mystery” of the universe often exposed through scientfic means. Or something like that. (Especially Firefly because it is space + libertarian).
Star-Trek was awesome because… it was mostly atheistic, and was pretty. Down side? Overt socialist propaganda (but it was such a fucking cool show.)
Star Wars was awesome because it was post-modern and espoused free-will (despite that pesky force). It was totally libertarian, though. Which is awesome.
Firefly (already mentioned) was pure genius. It was post-modern, libertarian, and presented really good philosophical questions about religion (Shepard Book was also a really intriguing character). Bad ass.
I am durnk (kinda like drunk, but more internet-y), but I plan on writing an awesome paper about this.
