Sarah Palin resigns: Sean Parnell to take Alaska Governorship end of the month:
Alaska is trading one Libertarian Republican governor for another. In a stunning political announcement Sarah Palin said at a press conference in front of her home in Wasilla, that she would not seek reelection. Further, she stated that she would resign her post and hand the reigns of the State office to her longtime friend and ally Sean Parnell.
I don’t know anything about Parnell, but Palin never, ever struck me as being that much of a Libertarian. Much too socially conservative, honestly.
I’ve mentioned that before, though, I think, that the two aspects -social and fiscal -are equally important. From the way I see it, she’s really just a conservative Republican – unlike many who simply wear the label and do whatever they please (RINOs, etc).
From RealClearPolitics (In September, 2008):
Palin, for example, vetoed 300 pork projects in Alaska in her first year in office. She made a habit of knocking out big-government Republicans in her brief political career. For this, the 44-year-old mother of five enjoys a sterling approval rating in a state with arguably the nation’s most libertarian-minded populace.
When it comes to healthcare, Palin says she wants to “allow free-market competition and reduce onerous government regulation.” These days, any mention of the “free market” that’s not framed as a crass pejorative is a sign of progress.
That’s good.
Yes, Palin is without argument a staunch social conservative. She is fervently opposed to abortion – even in cases of rape and incest, which will raise eyebrows, but is certainly more philosophically consistent than the namby pambyism of your average politician. The choice issue, after all, is complicated, even for many libertarians. And, as I was recently reminded, Ron Paul, the Libertarian champion of the 21st century, also opposes abortion.
That’s bad. (I have the same feeling towards Ron Paul, as well regarding this).
Honestly, it doesn’t matter anymore because she’s leaving the political sphere. I just don’t like how labels can be stolen and manipulated – if you call a spotted dog a cheetah long enough, maybe it will just become a cheetah, right?
I am still hungover from the 4th. Maybe that’s why I’m so mad about this. Hope everyone had a good Independence Day.
