Public Hearing on Beer Tax Hike

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A state legislative committee will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposal to increase Wisconsin’s beer tax for the first time since 1969.

The tax is the third lowest in the country and past attempts to raise it have met with significant opposition. The bill’s sponsor Rep. Terese Berceau, a Democrat from Madison, says this is the first time the proposal has had a hearing in 30 years.

That doesn’t necessarily mean its chances of passing are better. Gov. Jim Doyle has said he’s against it and earlier this year a coalition of brewers and the Tavern League of Wisconsin came out against it.

The proposal would raise the tax 2.4 cents per bottle of beer, with the $58 million raised directed to help pay for all the costs associated with alcohol abuse.

  1. Drinks are cheaper in Wisconsin.
  2. Locally brewed beers in Wisconsin are delicious (New Glarus for a prime example).
  3. This is fucking stupid.

I rest my case.
