Ominous reports are leaking past the BP Gulf salvage operation news blackout that the disaster unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico may be about to reach biblical proportions.

I mean, scientists don’t run around screaming ‘DOOMSDAY!!’ like chicken little. But there was the scientific basis for a glimmering hope of mass destruction. Obviously, I’m narcissistic enough to believe that I will be one of the survivors, killing and fighting for the remaining food supplies, hoarding antibiotics and generally being a post-apocalyptic badass. A post-apocalyptic badass with a degree in español (so I can barter with the surviving Mexicans).

Sadly, it was too good to be true. Well, fuckers, thanks.

I suspect that if something on the scale of a mass extinction event is even remotely possible, there should probably be contingency plans in place, right? Howabout getting that goddamn Mars colony started, Mr. President? If an asteroid destroys Earth, Mars is a nice fallback position. And it would be even more awesome than anything the SyFy channel is showing these days.

I think science and policy need to start reflecting a general need to realize our science fiction dreams. The DEA’s budget could be used for it instead of justifying a broken prohibitionist ideal.

Police officers are not required to use exact, cookie-cutter phrasing while advising criminal suspects of their right to have a lawyer present with them throughout a police interrogation, the US Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.

I get it, the supreme court isn’t there to dictate protocol. In fact, I can see this being somewhat of an improvement, if used to that end. Some people don’t get it and need it explained to them. On the other hand, the standard Miranda warning is pretty dummy-proof. They could possibly make it incomprehensible.

Reporting from Washington – A crime suspect who invokes his “right to remain silent” under the famous Miranda decision can be questioned again after 14 days, the Supreme Court ruled Wednesday. And if he freely agrees to talk then, his incriminatory statements can be used against him.

Why stop there? You learn about the 5th amendment in your highschool civics class, and therefore know it. Why should the police have to repeat it for you?

In the midst of all this (I’ve been sitting on this stuff for a month) I came across an article about modern day civil disobedience.

But, critics note, that hasn’t stopped people from wanting their day in court. About half of the total violations issued are still pending because people have ignored the tickets or have requested hearings to challenge them, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

The violations put an “inordinate” load on the courts, said Terry Stewart, a court administrator with Maricopa County. People have flocked to request hearings at Phoenix courts, and at one point last year, one court branch had cases set up through 2011.

Other people have been documented being violent, but the real thing to take away from this is that you have the right to challenge arrests in court. Most judicial proceedings are merely a formality – the method of civil disobedience to counter this is to take everything to court. Make their system of oppression too expensive. If I recall correctly, some of the civil rights activists did this.

Long-term use of marijuana can lead to increased risk of developing hallucinations, delusions and psychosis, a new study shows.

Which comes about a month after this article, which looks at the study in a much more detailed way:

These discoveries about the link between cannabis and psychosis have been widely reported in the media, often accompanied by warnings that street cannabis has risen in strength in recent years and therefore poses a major health risk to the susceptible minority.

This, however, is too simplistic: the type of cannabis taken is an important factor. Street cannabis has indeed changed over the years. So-called “skunk” does contain higher than normal concentrations of the main psychoactive compound, a molecule called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). What is less well known is that another constituent, cannabidiol (CBD), has been eliminated from skunk through selective breeding to increase the THC content.

The elimination of CBD may play a key role in the development of psychosis. Laboratory studies have shown that pure, synthetic THC causes transient psychosis in 40 to 50 per cent of healthy people. In stark contrast to THC, CBD appears to have an anti-psychotic effect, at least in animals. Studies in humans, though few in number, have produced similar findings.

Which is purely coincidental to the fact that so many states are now decriminalizing or legalizing it for medical use, right?
